6 karting tips for beginners
Karting is a fun and rewarding activity for people of all ages. Let’s face it, who hasn’t dreamed of the thrill of racing at some point in their lives?
With so many fun options, karting is for just about everyone. So whether you’re racing with your friends at a special party, going out with your coworkers, or just feel like hitting the track to see what it’s like to race on any given day, you’ll want to be prepared with all the tips you need to ensure victory (or nearly so).
1. Position yourself in the correct seating position
If you have the right seating position, it will be easier to get a head start on your competitors. Ideally, you should sit with your back resting comfortably against the seat, with the steering wheel at a relaxed arm’s length. Try not to lean or slouch forward, as this reduces your speed.
2. Grip the steering wheel symmetrically
Grip the steering wheel firmly but relaxed, with your hands directly opposite each other. If you’ve had driving lessons, think of the instruction “hands at 10 to 2”. Actually, you don’t need to be at 10 and 2, as long as your hands are positioned symmetrically (9 and 3, for example, is fine). This type of grip will prevent you from having to adjust your grip when entering or exiting corners, while maintaining your speed.
3. Maintain momentum
To do this, you need to be aware of what’s in front of you. Look ahead of you on the track so that you can anticipate the manoeuvres you will need to make in order to better position yourself for corners and overtaking. By doing so, you will maintain momentum, and high momentum equals speed.
4. Straight lines are the shortest way to victory
Keeping the kart in straight lines for the maximum distance travelled ensures the highest speeds. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Resist the temptation to close in on slower drivers by swerving and overtaking dramatically. The less you deviate from your straight line, the more you’ll maintain your speed.
5. Smooth driving is synonymous with fast driving
Following on from the straight line advice, make sure you keep your speed in a straight line as much as possible by making your turns smooth and gradual, i.e. no sudden movements. Likewise, alternating between acceleration and braking to manage your track placement only serves to slow you down in general.
6. Don’t brake sharply when turning
An effective turn is smooth and gradual. Choose the right line and you will maintain the maximum traction available.
Have a good race!
