What species of dolphins and whales can you see on the excursion?

These are the three species of cetaceans that could cross your path, each with their own secrets and wonders:

🐬 Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

The bottlenose dolphin, with its unmistakable dark grey colour and playful character, is one of the most charismatic species in the ocean. These mammals, which can weigh up to 500 kg and measure up to 3 metres long, are true acrobats of the sea. They are known for their exceptional intelligence and for forming complex social groups, where they cooperate to hunt and communicate through a wide range of sounds and gestures.

Fun Facts:

  • Social and communicative: Bottlenose dolphins use a form of “name” of their own, a unique whistle that allows them to identify each other.
  • Underwater tools: In some regions, these dolphins use sea sponges to protect their snouts while foraging for food on the seabed.

🐋 Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus)

Despite being technically a dolphin, the Tropical pilot whale is impressive for its size, measuring up to 5 metres in length and weighing up to 2 tonnes. Its almost black colour and domed head are distinctive of this species, a permanent resident of the Canary Islands. These cetaceans are extremely social and live in large groups, offering a unique opportunity to observe their complex interactions and behaviours.

Fun Facts:

  • Strong family bonds: Pilot whales form close-knit matriarchal groups, where calves remain with their mothers throughout their lives.
  • Sleep with one eye open: These cetaceans can sleep while swimming, shutting down half their brain at a time to keep moving and breathing.

🐳 Cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus)

The sperm whale is an imposing sight, with its striated skin and huge head, housing the largest brain in the animal kingdom. These giants, capable of diving to depths of up to three kilometres in search of squid and fish, are a rare but exciting sight in the waters off Tenerife. Despite their size and formidable appearance, sperm whales are gentle creatures and have been classified as a vulnerable species.

Fun Facts:

  • Diving champions: Sperm whales are the deepest and longest diving marine mammals, being able to stay underwater for more than an hour.
  • Long-distance communication: They use powerful clicks, the loudest sounds produced by a living animal, to communicate and sound in the dark depths of the ocean.

These three species represent just a sample of the rich marine biodiversity that surrounds the Canary Islands. By participating in a Viking cruise in Tenerife, you will not only immerse yourself in Viking history and culture, but also have the opportunity to connect with nature in a deep and meaningful way.

Ragnarok Tenerife – The Viking ship with the flag “Blue Boat”.

The Ragnarok of Tenerife is proud to carry the Blue Ship Flag! This distinctive mark ensures that we comply with national and international regulations for the protection of cetaceans, offering responsible and respectful whale watching. With the Ragnarok, you will enjoy a unique experience, always putting the welfare of marine animals at the forefront. 🐬🌊⚓

Dropping anchor and snorkelling in La Caleta

If you choose the 3-hour Viking boat cruise you will have the chance to snorkel in La Caleta. Imagine the whole family floating in crystal clear waters, surrounded by a breathtaking spectacle of marine life that will leave you breathless and in total safety.

The bay of La Caleta is not only a place of unparalleled beauty, but also a natural protected area for its great biological richness. As you dive, you will enter a vibrant and colourful world, inhabited by countless fish of all colours and sizes, manta rays gliding gracefully close to you, sea urchins hiding among the rocks, and a tapestry of marine plant species that bring the ocean floor to life.

🏝️ The Nature Reserve of La Caleta de Adeje

With more than 78 hectares of protected coastal space, La Caleta de Adeje is a sanctuary for marine life. Here, not only will you have the opportunity to swim alongside a rich variety of underwater species, but you will also be able to observe endangered and protected birds that make this place their home. It is a true paradise for nature lovers and snorkellers.
